イラク戦争によるサダム・フセイン政権の崩壊をはさんだ２００２年から２００４年にかけて、仕事でバグダッドに行きときの定番ルートが、ヨルダンのアンマンからイラクのバグダッドまで、陸路で１２時間かけて踏破するというものだった。
両国国境地帯は、延々と続く砂漠地帯。日中の酷暑から一転する夜の冷え込みはハンパでなく、砂漠の生活の厳しさを実感したものだった。
きのう読了した、松本清張の小説「砂漠の塩」の主舞台は、このルート上にあるイラク西部ルトバという町。ルトバという地名を目にして、せっせとイラクに通ったあの頃を思い出した。
ダブル不倫の２人が中東をさまようという設定の「砂漠の塩」には、もう一つ、ベイルート・ダマスカス街道も登場する。かつて日本赤軍の拠点があったベカー高原を横切る行程３時間のこの道も、一度通った人には忘れられない印象を残す。
このところ、中東を舞台とした小説をいくつか読んだ。
山崎豊子「不毛地帯」＝主人公は、旧日本軍参謀、瀬島龍三がモデルとされる。後半の主舞台がパーレビ王政時代のイラン
松本清張「砂漠の塩」＝カイロ、レバノン、シリア、ヨルダン、イラク
松本清張「火の路」＝イラン・テヘラン、イスファハン、ヤズド、ペルセポリス
といったところ

黒木亮「エネルギー」＝イランのアザデガン油田開発にまつわる企業小説
吉本ばなな「ＳＬＹ」＝エジプト・ルクソール、アスワンなどが舞台
なども。探せば、意外とあるもんだ。
渡辺謙主演で、日本で映画公開中という山崎豊子「沈まぬ太陽」でも、主人公・恩地さんは、テヘランにも「飛ばされる」よなあ。
